Sylvan Learning Center Mckinney Horrible and Unorganized

I took my child to Sylvan over the summer to work on reading, math, and study skills. I planned out his schedule with the director and manager from the beginning, however, each week I was being contacted as to what was he supposed to be working on. My child had rotating tutors that were inconsistent in their tutoring approach. He stated one teacher said that he wasn’t doing the math problem correctly, but offered no instruction to show him the right way. In the reading portion he was given a tablet with reading skills to do on his own and checked with the tutor after. My son said that once the work was automatically graded by the computer that was it, no one helped him review or guided him to why he got the grade he had. At the follow up conferences with Heather or Rebecca, I was being told that my child is doing great and they showed me what area he needs more help in, but when my child went to the next session he was again working independently and no one helping him on the areas he needed improvement. As a hardworking parent trying to prepare my child’s with extra tools for his future, I felt that this was truly a waste of time and money. They clearly are only interested in getting your money and not committing the needed time for the students. This experience with Sylvan Learning Center in McKinney left us totally disgusted. Don’t waste your time!

That’s not true. On the independent work the teacher’s gauge if the student it understanding the work or not (it was taught the previous time).

As soon as the assignement is done, the teacher has to score the assignment. There is no automatic scoring, unless you are doing math edge on the iPad.

Math edge is an independent math program so the students DO work alone- but you know that when you sign up for it and it’s not meant for students that need guidance. It’s also much cheaper.

I work at Sylvan as a tutor. They have some idiotic policy where you aren't actually allowed to help your students with the bulk of the work that they do. Actually helping your students is (literally) only allowed for about 1/6 of the workload that you give them, per corporate policy.

Lot of talk...

Expensive. Improvement barely seen. Lot of talk, lot of driving, lots of hours, lots of money. Lot of talk. Waste of money, waste of time, waste of intellectual time. But they do give out points to get carnival quality junk toys. Thousands of dollars that without argument could have gone to a better place to help my son. When grades are mentioned you get a song and dance routine then at the end the mention of more hours, more package deal 'hours' and never a mention why after fifty plus hours dedicated to one subject the child is still making a "F" in that subject. The child is not ***, just lazy.

I love Sylvan! I've been a student for two months now and I've noticed so much improvement in my reading skills. I struggle with comprehension and have an overall confidence when it comes to reading but Sylvan has brought up my confidence and showed me better strategies for comprehension. Sylvan is for all ages. They welcome everyone, even college students!

Unethical labor practice

(Item 1) I made one mistake on a problem I working on blackboard while teaching a student a ACT prep course. I corrected myself and told the student that I had made a mistake and show him the proper solution to the problem. (Item 2) I was asked to tutor a student in math. I wasn't given proper information what area of math I was to tutor the student. I wasn't able to help the student. I got upset with Sylvan employee who didn't give me the proper information. I was fired because of item 1 and item 2. Very unethical labor practice. Wish I could sue Sylvan for damages

Sylvan Learning Center - Tutoring Review from Harlingen, Texas

Thank you everyone for your reviews. I had planned on using Sylvan for tutoring and was waiting for them to get back with me to schedule a time to set up meeting with them. They have not contacted me and it's been two weeks. I started surfing the net and have found nothing but bad reviews after bad reviews from several different sites and blogs. I couldn't believe the amount of negative reviews I have come across. Not even one half way decent review anywhere. This is definitely my sign to not enroll in the Slyvan learning.

My opinion - Kumon Math and Reading centers are owned and run by pedophiles, child molesters and rapists. They should be renamed Kumon Molestation and Rape centers. Keep children away before they are raped by Kumon teachers.

My 10th grader went from public to private school. Geometry turned out to be a nightmare subject for him and got worse by Dec. after being out of school for 3 wks for surgery. My son was evaluated by Sylvan and I signed up 100 hrs and my son made a connection with a teacher and I MADE SURE we moved home schedules and worked w/ school and pulled him out early 3 days/wk to ensure he had this Sylvan teacher as well as Sat sessions until his grade improved. All homework/quizzes/tests were completed at Sylvan and we discovered he required extra time for tests as well as having a reading comprehension issue....so they began working w/ him in this area when possible.

Under paid teachers can't put their heart into it.

I tried Sylvan in Factoria Wa. they promised more than they could deliver. After trying it for a month and paying $245 mandatory registration and test fee, we were told that we are responsible to pay an additional $258 (2 week notice at $52 per hour). There is no satisfaction guarantee of any kind. I found out from the school that we can hire real experienced teachers who would love to tutor. You are better off hiring a tutor on referral and paying $60 than one who makes the minimum from Sylvan. We were very unhappy with sylvan. I asked them if they hold us responsible to pay for the next two weeks and the answer was absolutely.

Director Review

I had the worst experience with sylvan on Staten Island. The director pressured me to sign up and was so angry that I wouldnt I left in tears and had to send my husband in to get my child from testing!!' He should lose his job!! They only care about a commission not your child!!!terrible is putting it mildly.

DONT INVEST IN SYLVAN! No progress and no MySylvan after 6 weeks and $5,760.

Grandaughter didn't do 1st grade on time and now at 11 tested mastery in all 4th grade categories. She wanted to skip 5th and attempt to test into 6th to join her age group and has been doing 20 hours a week at sylvan for 6 of the 8 week plan.

I don't see the progress they claim. AND I have spent many hours trying to get to "MySylvan" where I can see what she is doing day by day. Local manager is helpful but corporate support is lacking.

I have not found a contact for corporate help.DONT INVEST IN SYLVAN. (and I don't like the "pissed consumer lable" better "displeased".)

Are you ever wrong. My Granddaughter went from a D to a B in less than 8 months.

Many, many children have been raped and molested at Kumon learning centers by teachers and staff. It is everywhere in the news. Google "kumon molestation" or "kumon scam" and you can read for yourself all of the crimes at Kumon.

I thought sylvan was suppose to help your child. I took my daughter in to get her vision checked out and it turned out that she has double vision.

After paying more than 3,000 dollars to help my daughter get better they (sylvan) failed to tell me one if the most critical things that has affected her learning. I was told by her vision therapist that sylvan should have caught that. Had they (sylvan)told me that they had a concern about her vision I could have taken her in sooner and that money I had paid them could have went towards her vision therapy. Tells me how much they care.

I contacted sylvan to see what they had to say, nothing they kept my money what a total loss.

Not even compensation for at least a few free classes. I would do anything for my children I guess they took us as suckers!

I have heard of people getting refunds . And unless you sign a contract promising to bring u your child you are not responsible .

We have been going to Sylvan sinc oct ( the end of 2014) and it has been a tough go my so. Is in the 5 th grade and they started him at the 1st grade level for reading !!

I think it is a scam to get us parents to pay more when they are not even doing grade level stuff. I am using the ones we paid for then we are done with SYLVAN !

Guest

School teachers are not trained to diagnose vision problems; the school nurse does that. So, Sylvan tutors who are with students only a few hours a week would not pick up on that.

Also, the comments people left are ridiculous. How can people say she's a bad mother and that all she cares about is money?

Get a life! You don't know this lady.

Guest

You obviously don't care about your daughter either, you care more about the money you had to pay than her vision, besides as a mother should you yourself not know something was wrong with her vision? Don't blame her the company for your bad parenting.

I have to agree with you here, her daughter has vision problems and she seems to care more about getting money back and free lessons than her daughter's vision, this shows money is more important to her than her daughter is. Yeah you would do anything for your children, except if money is involved because money is more important than your children.

I agree you are a bad parent, you did not notice your own daughter had vision problems, and you want money back form someone else who did not notice this.

Part of the blame is yours. You could care less about your daughter money is more important to you.

I didn't ask for money back, Free lessons! and you guys are just critics have nothing better to do.

You don't know me to call me a bad mother. Money ain't *** to me I would do anything for my children, and at that *** there lessons how about that.

I am not the only parent here complaining about there services. That must say something!

Both "ddd" and first "Anonymous" are employees of Syvan Learning Center! NO real parent will pass such harsh judgement on another parent without knowing the facts.

The child's mother CLEARLY cared about her child: evidence: she enrolled her in the very expensive Sylvan AND took her child to see an eye doc. ANYONE who works hard for their money would be upset at feeling that their hard earned money was not put to good use. Her original focus was her child... after SHE took care of that, she then turned her focus on a legitimate concern.

She wasn't even asking for money back.. she would have been satisfied with at least a few free classes!

Clearly those first 2 comments were from Sylvan trolls. I wonder how much they got paid for that!?
